Genesis 1:2-4

Happy Tuesday, y'all! :)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Genesis 1:2-4
The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.

There are times when my life seems "formless and void", without purpose or plan, yet the Spirit of God is moving and working there still. His first work is to bring light--His truth. His second is to separate the light from the darkness. Only in my life, unlike in creation, He then works to eradicate the darkness.
God also works in His own way and His own time, sometimes without "logical" sequence--ie, creating plants on the third day, but no sun (which is necessary for plants to live and grow) until the fourth day. And He is under no obligation to explain Himself! :)

Father, sometimes it's hard to see how You're working--yet I know that You are. Help me to trust in Your faithfulness to complete what You have begun in me, even when I seem to be standing still!

May the Lord richly bless you as you trust in His faithful working in your life!

Isaiah 8:11-13

Hey, everyone!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Isaiah 8:11-13

The LORD has said to me in the strongest terms: "Do not think like everyone else does. Do not be afraid that some plan conceived behind closed doors will be the end of you. Do not fear anything except the LORD Almighty. He alone is the Holy One. If you fear Him, you need fear nothing else." (NLT)

That first command really jumped out at me: "Do not think like everyone else does." Even my thoughts and my very mindset should be different, holy, set apart for God. I'm reminded of Romans 12:2--"be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind."
The rest of this passage in Isaiah goes on to apply this "think different" command specifically to living with no fear but a holy fear of God. "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7) God wants His people to live boldly, purposefully, confidently--differently. And that difference starts in the way we think.

Father, help me to develop a mindset that reflects Yours and thoughts that glorify You. I refuse to think and live "like everyone else!" I don't want to be like the world out there; I want to be like You.

May the Lord richly bless you as you think like Him, not like everyone else!

Psalm 150:2

Good morning, y'all!
So...it's been 4 1/2 very busy months since the last Mornin' SunShine. I am so sorry! Although my life has been pretty crazy (summer internship with a local ministry and a trip to Bolivia with my sister), that's a pretty lame excuse. I'm going to be working on getting back into a routine with better priorities--one of them being the Mornin' SunShine e-mails!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Psalm 150:2
Praise Him for His powerful acts;
praise Him for His abundant greatness.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, it seems like everyone is looking for things to praise and thank God for. This verse shows us the two-fold basis of our praises: 1) what He has done and 2) who He is. This year, let's go beyond "I'm thankful for my family"...what has God done in your life this year? Who has He revealed Himself to be to you? Those things are worthy of the greatest praise we can give Him--at Thanksgiving and all year long!

Father, You are constantly at work in my life; help me to see and recognize Your "powerful acts" and "abundant greatness" in my life!!

May the Lord bless you richly as you praise Him for His power and greatness in your life!

Genesis 15:8-11

Happy Monday, everyone! :)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Genesis 15:8-11
And he said, "Lord GOD, how shall I know that I will inherit it?"
So He said to him, "Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtle dove, and a young pigeon." Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

That last sentence used to seem slightly obscure to me; like it was just sort of thrown in there. But recently I was hit with the impact of this little verse: Abram jealously guarded his covenant with the Lord. It would have been easier to just let the vultures munch on the dead animals; apparently God didn't immediately consume this offering. It would have been easier to reason that he could just prepare another sacrifice later. But Abram didn't choose the easy way. He fought for this covenant, recognizing the vital importance of it.
This made me think--am I willing to fight for my covenant with God? Am I willing to jealously defend and protect my time and relationship with Him? There are so many "vultures" in life that are all too eager to devour the offering of my life to Him--distractions, time-wasters, even good things that would replace or cut into the time or affection that should be His. Will I let them eat away at the precious relationship I have with the Lord, or will I drive them away?

Father, what can I say? I am Yours! And I will fight with everything that is in me to protect my relationship with You!

May the Lord richly bless you as you jealously guard your relationship and covenant with Him!

Romans 1:6-7

Happy Friday, y'all! Have a blessed weekend! :)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Romans 1:6-7
Among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; to all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

It's always good to be reminded of who I am in Christ. In Him, I am called--this gives me purpose. I am loved by God--this gives me value. I am called to be a saint--this gives me both humility and honor. It's all about Him and His work, but how sweet to know that in His eyes I am precious and treasured and worthy to be loved!

Father, how can I ever say thank You for the sweet love You have poured out on me?! You are so great--yet You choose to love me. Thank You!

May the Lord richly bless you with a new realization of who you are in Him!

Romans 1:5

Hey, everyone! :)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Romans 1:5
Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name

There are three things that stuck out to me about this "obedience to the faith." First, only through God's grace and by His calling ("apostleship") can we obey. Second, it is unaffected by culture or circumstances--this faith-full obedience is yielded "among all nations." Some of the "nations" Paul was referring to were pretty hostile to Christianity, yet even there they were able to maintain obedience because their obedience was not dependent on anything but God. And lastly, this obedience is "for His name". It is for God's glory, not for our own. We obey by His grace, dependent solely on Him, for His glory!

Father, help me to be obedient to the faith, by Your grace, for Your glory, regardless of the culture around me or the circumstances I may find myself in!

May the Lord richly bless you as you seek to obey Him above all else!

Romans 6:4-5

Good morning! :)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Romans 6:4-5
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection"

Newness of life sounds pretty cool. Being in the likeness of Christ's resurrection is something we all want. But I think that too often we overlook the first part of all this: the "baptism into death" and the "likeness of His death" part. Life sounds awesome; death, not so much. Yet how can we have one without the other? Unless we die with Christ, we will never experience the glory of resurrection with Christ! Oswald Chambers hit the nail on the head when he said, "Sanctification means being made one with Jesus so that the disposition that ruled Him will rule us. It will cost everything that is not of God in us." That is "death"--the death of everything that is not of God in us. As those things that are not of God in our lives die, we are able to walk in "newness of life". And note that this newness of life is brought about by "the glory of the Father"; so shouldn't it be lived for the same glory?

Father, help me to walk in newness of life for Your glory!

May the Lord richly bless you as you walk in newness of life for His glory!

Romans 1:3-4

Happy Monday, y'all! :)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Romans 1:3-4
Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

Jesus was "fully man, fully God"; God's Son, and our Lord. He was a humble, simple carpenter from the lineage of King David while here on earth. Yet He was declared to be the Son of God with power. This power was made most grandly obvious by His resurrection from the dead, yet it was not confined to that one event. His power brought healing to the sick, hurt, and broken-hearted; it brought freedom to those enslaved by darkness; it brought new life to those who were dead. And His power has not changed! That same power can work in your life, today! Where we see impossibilities, God sees opportunities--if we will only get out of His way, yield to Him, and let Him unleash His power in our life!

Father, You are such a powerful God! My "problems" and the obstacles I see in my life become so small in light of Your power. May Your power take over my life!

May the Lord richly bless you as you seek to see His power at work in your life!

James 4:4-5

Good morning, y'all!

James 4:4-5
Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously"?

The motivation for desiring a friendship with God over a friendship with the world is that "the Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously". I looked up that word "yearns" in a couple of Greek dictionaries...it means : "to long for, desire, to pursue with love, to long after" (Thayer's) and "(to yearn); to dote upon, that is, intensely crave possession" (Strong's). God's Holy Spirit yearns and longs for us; He pursues us with love; He intensely craves to call us entirely His own. Do we return this craving with a longing of our own to develop an ever-deepening friendship with God? Or are we so busy trying to be "relevant" so we can "relate to the world" that we don't even realize we have ceased to relate to God? Who would we rather be friends with--God or the world? We have to choose! And do we conciously make that choice in all of our seemingly little everyday decisions?

Father, I would rather know You and be known as Yours than anything; but it's easy to lose sight of that big goal in the "littleness" of everyday life! Help me to keep that in mind, conciously choosing YOU in every decision I make, looking at each decision as a step towards You...and away from the world.

May the Lord richly bless you as you pursue a friendship with Him rather than the world!

Luke 1:74-75

Good morning, y'all!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke 1:74-75
To grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.

We have been delivered that we might serve Him. That is a slightly revolutionary thought--God didn't save me from sin for my comfort, but for His glory. It also happens to lead to a much better life, ultimately, but the road there isn't necessarily going to be smooth. And I believe that how I walk that road should be impacted by this realization that I was delivered to serve Him.
This service should be bold, uninhibited, free from any fear of man. Paul stated that if he was still worried about serving men, he wouldn't be the servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10) "Fear of man" and "serving God" are, evidently, mutually exclusive.
Our service should also flow out of a life of holiness and righteousness. It doesn't have to be a life of "perfectness", but a constant pressing onward. And again, the idea of pleasing God, not man, is here: the phrase "before Him" literally means "in His face". Who cares what the world may say, is our life holy in God's eyes? Are we right with God? And are we striving to serve Him all the days of our life?

Father, help me to serve You boldy, without fear; living a holy and righteous life before You!

May the Lord richly bless you as you live for Him!

Job 37:5-6

Mornin', y'all! :)

Job 37:5-6
God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things which we cannot comprehend. For He says to the snow, "Fall on the earth"; likewise to the gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.

Elihu, one of Job's friends, saw the snow as something that showcases God's character. I've also always been mesmerized by snow. Today, San Angelo is blanketed with a white covering, and more of it is falling softly. We don't get snow here very often, which I suppose makes us appreciate it more. I love to just stare out at it, amazed at its power to transform something so ordinary into something so extraordinarily beautiful as it falls gently, quietly. It's one of those great things beyond our comprehension that God does. We are captured by its beauty as our lives are slowed or sometimes even stopped by it. I wonder if maybe God created snow to make us slow down and reflect on Him. He reveals Himself in all of nature; His power to transform anything into something beautiful is somehow represented by the silent transforming power of the snow. This transformation by God is beautifully portrayed in one of the more famous "snow" verses--"'Come now, and let us reason together,' says the LORD, 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.'" (Isaiah 1:18) After all, that is the ultimate transformation; and it is definitely a great thing that I cannot comprehend!

Father, thank You for the transformation You have already accomplished in my life--that of guilty to not guilty; from dirtied with sin to white as snow. You are so great, beyond anything I could ever hope to understand! Continue to transform me into the complete masterpiece You have created me to be!

May the Lord richly bless you as you marvel at His beyond-comprehension-greatness!

Psalm 119:17

Good morning, y'all! :)

Psalm 119:17
Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word.

There are those who would say that to live according to God's word would be "restrictive", perhaps even boring or dull. But I would propose that the only way to truly live is by keeping His word. A life lived apart from God's word is just going through the motions; only as we live by His word do we find true abundant life and liberty.
Note that the Psalmist isn't asking for God's bountiful dealing so that he can be happy and free from care; or so that he will be richer than his neighbor; or so that he can fulfill any earthly desire, however innocent. His purpose in longing for God's blessing is that he might serve Him more. That he might live more fully for Him. That he might be ever truer to His word. Therefore, I don't think the "deal bountifully" is a request for earthly blessings, but for spiritual. He is longing for more of God's grace, presence and power, more of Him flowing through his life. He is crying out, "Oh, God--pour Your grace out on me, that I might continue to live in service to You!"

Father, You have already "dealt bountifully" with me, in so many ways! Continue to pour Your grace and power into my life, enabling me to live to serve You and keep Your word!

May the Lord richly bless you as you live and keep His word!

Exodus 2:1-3

Good afternoon, everyone! :)

Exodus 2:1-3
And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river's bank.

I have often wondered just what Jochebed (Moses' mother) was hoping to accomplish by placing her infant son in the river in a basket. This little action really seems to have no rhyme or reason. I may never know (until I get to heaven) why she placed Moses in the river; but I wonder if it was sort of symbolic. She was placing her baby wholly in the hands of an unseen, unpredictable God; she had no idea what God's plan for her baby's life was or how He was going to work it out, just as she had no idea where the river would take him. She simply placed him there in faith, and walked away, trusting her baby--so dear and precious to her heart--wholly and completely to God in a very real way.

Father, help me to trust You completely, as Jochebed did, with even the things I hold most dear! To place them in Your hands and leave them there for You to do whatever You want.

May the Lord richly bless you as you choose to trust Him!

Isaiah 58:4-9a

Happy Friday, everyone! :)

Isaiah 58:4-9a
Indeed you fast for strife and debate, and to strike with the fist of wickedness. You will not fast as you do this day, to make your voice heard on high. Is it a fast that I have chosen, a day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, and to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh? Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I am.'

In the first kind of fast described here, the people were focused on outward things; trying to look like they were fasting, look like they were spiritual. They also went into this fast with their own idea of what should happen, and then when God didn't do what they thought He should, they got upset with Him. This kind of fast is useless, a waste of time and completely lacking in power.
But look at the fast that God has chosen!! In this fast there is great power--the power to break the chains of sin and slavery, the power to lift heavy burdens, the power to set others free, the power of healing and the power of a ready audience with God. In fact, this fast that God has chosen is not about an outward appearance at all; it's all about the releasing of God's power in a situation by obeying Him even when we don't understand why, or how He's going to work. It's all about simply being willing and available to be a vessel of His power to a world in desperate need of God! It is a glorious mystery beyond our comprehension, why and how God uses His people as conduits for His amazing works. But the fact is He does, and He is longing for a people who will choose the fast that He has chosen that He might pour out His power through them. Will we be that people?I

Father, I want to be one through whom Your power flows!!! I give myself to You; help me to choose You in every choice I make, big and small; to live my life yielded completely to You for You to use as You see fit. I will choose to live this fast that You have chosen--even when I don't understand what all that means!

May the Lord richly bless you as you yield yourself to be used by Him!

Genesis 1:24-25

Hey, y'all!
Well, I noticed the other day that the e-mail I tried to send back in December explaining that we were in the middle of moving and it would be after the first of the year before I got back to Mornin' SunShine got cut off. I'm sorry about that! We had no internet so I was trying to do it from my phone, and apparently it didn't work too well. The good news, though, is that we are pretty much settled here in San Angelo, and I'm back! :)

Genesis 1:24-25
Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind"; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Everything on the earth "brings forth according to its kind". It started here in Genesis 1, and continues to this day. Dogs have dogs, cats have cats, apples produce apples and peaches produce peaches, etc., etc., you get the picture. So what's the point? Simply this: since everything reproduces after its own kind, shouldn't we strive to be the difference we want to "bring forth" in the world? If we want to go out into the world and make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20) who are passionate for God and who obey His word, wouldn't it follow that we must be passionate, and we must obey His word?! If we want to see Christ-like results in our lives and ministry to others, shouldn't we be pressing on toward being Christ-like??

Father, I want to make a difference, but first I must be willing to be that difference. Help me to press on toward being more like You, trusting that as I become more like You, the fruit of my life will be Godly fruit.

May the Lord richly bless you as you strive to be like Him and "bring forth" a Godly difference in our world!
